This is Hillary LaVoie.  She is 18 years old from Las Vegas, Nevada.  She graduated from a school that she loved with an Advanced Honors Diploma after four years of hard work.  She was beyond involved.  Her after school activities consisted of Cheerleading, Student Council, being president of the spirit club, and being everybody’s best friend.  Like any other teenager, she loved to go out with friends, live life, and make countless memories.  Her favorite color is Yellow.  Her favorite band is the Beatles.  She shares a love for Harry Potter with many.  After she graduated she began attending college.  Sounds like any other teenager, right?  Wrong.  Hillary had many friends attending University of Nevada, Reno.  In September 2010, she and two of her best friends took a road trip from Las Vegas to Reno to visit some of their friends.  After a weekend of fun, they left Reno to return home.  On September 26, 2010, these three girls were in a tragic car accident.  Hillary in the passenger seat and her friend in the back seat were not wearing their seat belts.  They were ejected from the car.  The driver fortunately was wearing her seat belt and was not badly injured.  The backseat passenger was injured from being thrown from the car.  And on September 26th, 18 days after her 18th birthday, Hillary lost her life.  News began to reach friends of hers across the country and devastation struck.  Devastated students of her high school mourned.  No one understood how something so horrible could happen to such a beautiful and talented girl.  There was so much that everyone expected Hillary to do in life.  Hillary’s parents began a foundation called “The Hillary LaVoie Effort” to create awareness of seat belt safety.  In the midst of a tragedy that has left hundreds of people heartbroken, they’ve all bonded together for one common cause.  For everyone to

Nearly 9 months later, a law against texting and driving has almost been completely put into effect in Nevada.  Her family is continuing to work hard to put a primary seat belt law into effect.
All I ask of you now is to take two seconds to put on your seat belt every time you get into the car.  Most people think that it’s uncomfortable or that nothing will ever happen to you.  Don’t wait to be proven wrong.  No one expected anything bad could ever happen to anyone as perfect and loving as Hillary.  Please make sure that everyone you’re riding with is wearing a seat belt too.  You don’t want to look back and wonder what would have happened if you had just said those six words.
“Please put on your seat belt.”
